My main job as a second shooter is to assist Amy in whatever way possible.  This includes taking care of the equipment, setting up lights, holding the reflector, getting food and drink, and, of course, capturing the candids and the different perspectives of the day.  The photos I take do get used in blog posts and the couple does get to see quite a lot of them, so they aren’t all bad! :)

I’m pretty proud when my photo gets the cover of the wedding album or a complete page spread in the album and this is what the post today is all about:

THE ONE awesome photo that knocks Amy’s socks off!

Without further ado, here is the “the one” from Jackie and Joey’s engagement session:

After each engagement shoot and wedding that we do, I will, hopefully, have a photo that gets deemed “the one” and will share it will all of you!

Here’s to finding “the one” no matter where, or what, or who!

jackie + joey: promised. a downtown memphis engagement.

May 3rd, 2013

For years, Jackie knew she would marry Joey. Maybe not when she first saw him at work. Maybe not even later, at the Shinedown concert that was their first official date. But as they grew to know each other more, Jackie fell in love, and she knew. She just didn’t know when.

He had the ring for six weeks before he found the perfect moment to use it. Like any good Southern gentleman, he wanted to ask for Jackie’s hand directly from her father first. Once he had his blessing, Joey planned the proposal carefully. Valentine’s dinner at their favorite restaurant. Wedding cake flavored cupcakes for dessert, a hint that Jackie didn’t pick up on. And the waitstaff waiting patiently with a camera for the moment that he got on his knee.

The girl who thought she would see it coming didn’t expect it at all. Through tears of joy and surprise, surrounded by smiling onlookers, she nodded her yes. And right then, she saw a lifetime of happiness ahead of her. She just knew it.

Ed and I met Jackie and Joey downtown for their engagement session. Since they will be getting married on the beach in a destination wedding, they wanted a little Memphis in their engagement photos.

Jackie, you are so gorgeous!

We had to have a few shots in front of the restaurant where Joey proposed.

One of my very favorites!

We ended at the river just in time to catch sunset.

Sigh.

Jackie and Joey, thank you so much for spending an evening with us! We had a blast getting to know you. I know your wedding day will be filled with much more love and laughter!

Here’s to knowing. But not knowing when. And a good Southern gentleman. Cheers!

kiley + lofton: promised. a memphis harbortown engagement.

I was looking back through all my blog posts from last year, and I realized there was an engagement session missing. I don’t know how this happened. I remember writing the post and preparing the photos, but it’s nowhere to be found. Ed said it may have been lost when we moved servers late last year, so I’m going with that. Anything that doesn’t put the blame on me! I blog all my photo sessions and weddings, and I didn’t want to leave this one out, especially when it’s so lovely! But I wanted to do something different this time.

Kiley and Lofton decided that they wanted an album with their engagement photos to use as the guest book at their wedding. I absolutely LOVE it when clients opt for this! I think it’s such a unique way to include your engagement photos on your wedding day, and it turns the engagement memories into wedding memories as well, since it will be full of well wishes from loved ones after the big day.

So, instead of just blogging my favorites from their session, I’m going to blog their album design instead. Lofton carefully planned out his proposal and let family in on the plan. He and Kiley are very creative and love art, so he took her to an art studio for a lesson. Halfway through the evening, he painted the most important question he would ever ask on a canvas and got down on one knee. Kiley immediately said yes and painted her answer next to his question as her family came out from hiding to congratulate the couple. They wanted to recreate this moment for their engagement session, and their album now tells the story that they will never forget.

Lofton started off by painting their wedding date on a fresh canvas. We left lots of white space in the album so that guests will have plenty of room to write their remarks.

They brought the original painting to be included in the photos as well.

Kiley, you are so gorgeous!

After the painting session and an outfit change, we went to Harbortown for some fun photos of the two of them.

Ed’s creative genius on the left.

Love this one!

It was a gorgeous fall day!

For sunset, we finished up on the river for some romantic shots.

Kiley. Stop.

My favorite for the back cover!

Memphis Harbortown Engagement Album (25)

Kiley and Lofton, thank you for spending the day with us! We had such a great time, and cannot WAIT for the wedding! It’s going to be so full of fabulousness. Enjoy this album, and I know it will be a keepsake for years to come!

Here’s to painting the most important question of your life. And being creative. Even with your engagement photos! Cheers!

They went to the same college. They both spent time in South America. At the same time. They both speak Spanish fluently. They have the same music tastes and the same interests. They have so much in common, and yet they had never met.

It wasn’t until Michael was moving to the area when he finally met Deanna. Although she was a little out of his preferred age range, he made an exception, because everything else was so perfect. They had their first date at Huey’s, a Memphis icon, and he immediately dismissed the age difference. He loves that she loves what he loves. He loves that he can talk to her in Spanish. He loves that she is the only one who can consistently beat him at SongPop. She loves that he is calm and quiet, and balances her emotional upheavals. She loves that she can talk to him in Spanish. She loves his maturity, balanced by his carefree spirit and his easy smile.

They simply complement in each other. In fact, when they talk about each other, they each use the word complement when referring to the other. Without knowing.

When Michael knew that he wanted to be with Deanna forever, he planned a picnic in the park, right around her birthday. After they had wine and cheese in the warm sun, they strolled through the wooded trails. It was in a clearing where Michael took Deanne’s hand and began telling her all the things he loved about her. Not realizing what was happening, she teased him, “what, are you proposing or something?” Her smile quickly turned to tears as he dropped to his knee and asked her to be his wife. In her surprised glee, she managed to squeak out her assent.

Deanna and Michael will be tying the knot later this year, but wanted to recreate their special proposal for their engagement session. We met at Overton Park for our own version of their picnic.

Their awesome picnic basket was a gift from a family member. Ed’s photo on left.

My favorite! Deanna and Michael are so natural in front of the lens.

Another favorite. Complete happiness and peace.

After the wine, we strolled through the woods to try to find the clearing where Michael proposed. We never did, but we had fun looking! This may or may not be the spot where I commented on how much I loved the trees without all their branches. Branches, people! That’s what came out of my mouth instead of leaves. It was entertainment for the rest of the day. You’re welcome.

Overton Park Engagement

I must confess, I never knew there were trails at Overton, but you can bet I’ll be going back! It was beautiful nature.

Overton Park Engagement

But Deanna and Michael sure did dress it up!

The light through the trees could not have been more beautiful. But not more beautiful than Deanna!

Overton Park Engagement

A heart carved on a fallen tree. How perfect is that?

Deanna and Michael, thank you for spending the afternoon with us! We need to go back and find that clearing! We loved learning your story, and definitely agree that you both complement each other perfectly. We can’t wait for the wedding!!

Here’s to Spanish. And being the perfect complement. And overlooking age. Cheers!

He was looking for someone independent. Someone who knew her own mind, knew what she wanted, and knew how to take care of things. But he was also looking for someone who knew she wanted to share her life with someone else. She was waiting. She had gone most of her life on her own, and was not willing to settle for just anyone. He had to be special. She was waiting for the right one to convince her to share her home, her life, and her dog. She was waiting for him.

Angel and David knew right away that they were meant for each other. They were the perfect fit for each other, filling in the holes that were empty in their lives. The deal was sealed when they finally put their dogs in the same room, her tiny lap dog alongside his big one. And they got along perfectly. The dogs approved, so they knew they could move forward. David made it official when he came into her store one day with a simple proposal and asked her to be his wife. No production. No fanfare. Just her style. They will tie the knot early next year in Oxford, and begin sharing their life with the one who makes them complete.

Ed an I met Angel and David in the Cooper Young District of Midtown Memphis for their engagement session. The location is perfect for them – understated with lots of character!

David loves to take pictures. My kind of man!

I love the way they make each other smile.

A field of flowers and a a bit of flare? Yes, please!

Love this one.

We had to make sure to include some neon and brick to bring out their urban sides. While I was getting this shot…

Ed was grabbing this angle.

We ended with a sunset behind beautiful flowers and old bungalows.

Angel and David, thank you for making the drive and spending an afternoon with us! We enjoyed getting to know you both, and we can’t wait for the wedding!

Ebony and Travis have a photo of them together. Before they really knew each other. It was a group photo at some party, and Ebony and Travis are both there, on opposite sides of the photo. Travis loves to pick up the photo now, excitedly point at Ebony, and exclaim, look! it’s my future wife! and i didn’t even know it!

Later, fate put them next to each other in the same room, and they started to talk. Not only did they think that the other was more-than-average-attractive, but Travis saw that Ebony was fun. And Ebony realized that Travis liked the same things she did. Travel. Food. Good food. In fact, they both consider themselves amateur food critics, and it has since become habit for them to check out new restaurants in order to compare notes.

When Travis realized that he was ready to add that fateful photo to their permanent life story, he took Ebony on a spontaneous picnic. Since they love food, romance, and al fresco dining, Ebony didn’t think anything much about it. Then he pulled out the ring and asked her to be his wife. Too overwhelmed to respond, she nodded her answer. Ever since then, their photos have included each other. Side by side.

Ebony and Travis will marry next year on a Florida beach, the perfect location for this travel-loving couple. Ed and I met them both at Shelby Farms for their engagement session. Although it was a bit cold, they rocked it out, and we had such a blast!

Travis is a military man, and could hold a pose forever! But he also had no problem having fun in front of the camera!

Doesn’t Ebony have the most gorgeous legs? Travis and Ebony run faithfully, together. When Ebony suggested joining Travis on his runs, he was surprised, but she told him matter-of-factly, I refuse to be the 0 in our 10! Love. This. Girl.

Girlfriend, this photo is ferocious.

Since Travis proposed on a picnic, they had to bring their own version! Ebony loves yellow, and this is the same blanket they used for the proposal picnic.

What’s a picnic without a little wine? They let me taste it. It was gooood. Ed’s photo on the right.

Ebony, you kill me.

Ebony found this vintage camera at a yard sale for about $5. I’m going to start hitting the yard sales with her for one of my own!

After one more change of clothes, we finished up at their favorite Mexican joint for sunset photos on the patio. And margaritas. There were margaritas involved.

Oh, divine light, how I love you!

I’ll end with this photo, which shows their softer side, but also their passion. For life. For each other.

Ebony and Travis, thank you so much for hanging out with us for an afternoon! It was a pleasure to get to know you both better, and solidify my suspicion that we are going to get along famously! It’s fabulous to have margarita partners-in-crime! And the table discussion will remain just between us ;) I can’t WAIT for Destin!!

Lora and Richard have known each other for a very long time. They have photos of them together in grade school. They were high school sweethearts. And they knew each other before, and after, the accident that changed their lives. When driving home one night, Richard got sleepy, so he pulled over. He took a nap, but the particular way his head fell forward while he slept damaged his spinal cord, leaving him wheelchair bound. Everything changed for him, but Lora remained his one constant. She stayed with him through his healing process, and she intends to stay right by his side. Forever.

Richard asked Lora to marry him at a dinner date disguised as a celebration of her graduation from nursing school. They both knew they would always be together, but faced with the ring, Lora broke down into sobbing tears. She pulled herself together enough to drive them both home, only to start all over again when she walked in to cheers of congratulations by her family. Lora claims that she’s not a crier, all evidence to the contrary. She blames it on graduation stress instead. And looking over at Richard, she smiles, and says, we’ve been through a lot. Whatever the excuse for the unconventional tears, it’s obvious that Lora and Richard are simply overwhelmingly in love. And next month, just days before Christmas, they will pledge that love, and their lives, to each other. As if they haven’t already.

Ed and I met Lora and Richard at their home, where we started off their engagement session in their beautifully landscaped backyard. Richard had even put out some autumn flowers and decorations for Lora.

Ed’s view of the bling.

Lora, you are absolutely gorgeous. While being serious…

And while laughing! This girl has a zeal for life, ya’ll.

I love. this. one.

That lorapetalum shrub in the background is one of Richard’s favorites. The man knows his plants. What you may not know right away after first meeting him is that he also has an awesome sense of humor. Perfect for constantly putting that smile on Lora’s face!

Ed’s ninja angle…

When we were done wandering around their yard, we traveled down the street to a nearby park where we could take advantage of the fall leaves.

Yes, they’re adorable!

My hands-down favorite.

Lora is serious when it comes to kissing her man. She does it right.

I’ll end with this perfect example of their tender love. I think they are both extremely lucky to have each other!

Lora and Richard, thank you so much for hanging out with us for an afternoon! And thank you so much for the wine – it was so thoughtful! I could have stayed all night chatting it up with you and your family! The wedding is going to be amazing!

One of my very favorite things is when I get to work with a family member of a previous couple. Last May, we shot Rachael’s and Matt’s awesome wedding (still one of my favorite receptions ever!) in Oxford. Early next year, I will be eternally grateful to photograph the wedding of Matt’s brother, Chris, and his lovely bride, Lauren. In fact, it was Rachael who introduced them. After Rachael started dating Matt, she told Lauren, who is one of her good friends, that she should meet his brother. Lauren figured he would not make the cut, since he wasn’t taken already (read: there must be something wrong with him!), but she agreed to meet him anyway. When she did, it didn’t take long for her to fall head over heels. In her words, Chris is “a nice guy. He’s genuine. What you see is what you get.” It turned out Chris wasn’t taken already because he was waiting for the right girl. He was waiting for Lauren.

Chris knew right away that Lauren was the right girl. When he decided that he wanted to be with her forever, he took her to the mountains in Gatlinburg with a plan to propose. Since neither had been there since they were young, they had forgotten how cheesy it is. Determined to make the most of it anyway, Chris asked their hotel manager for a suitable sight-seeing attraction. So, at the top of the Space Needle, Chris made his plans to ask Lauren to marry him. But Chris is deathly afraid of heights. So while Lauren ooohed and aaaahed over the views, Chris remained plastered to the inside wall. Even after asking Lauren to marry him, he refused to take the ring out of the box, for fear of dropping it! Lauren agreed with excitement, and began jumping up and down on the rickety structure, which only added to Chris’ anxiety.

I am pleased to say that they both survived the trip and returned to Oxford engaged! They will marry in April here in Memphis, but Ed and I drove to Oxford for their engagement shoot. They chose one of my most favorite locations: William Faulkner’s historic home, Rowan Oak, and the day could not have been more perfect for it!

Yes, they are entirely adorable.

I think this one is my favorite.

No, wait, maybe it’s this one….

Meanwhile, Ed is always thinking of an alternate angle. His shot of the bling on the left.

LOVE this one too!

Chris, I can totally see why Lauren likes you.

I love shooting in the fall!

Sigh.

Oh, I am SO all about the boots.

Rowan Oak is amazing. Beautiful. Perfect. I could shoot there every day and never get tired of it.

Lauren and Chris were so much fun, and made my job super easy!

Rustic wooden gate? Yes please!

Okay, this one is definitely my favorite. Maybe.

Lauren and Chris, we had an amazing time hanging out with you! I love your out-of-the-box thinking, and the way you are not afraid to be yourselves! Thankyouthankyouthankyou for spending an evening with us, and totally rocking it for the camera! By the way, I did go back and look at Rachael’s and Matt’s reception photos, and I was obviously smitten with you back then! I have a ton of photos of you two ;)

They’ve been chasing each other their whole lives. Kelsey and Drew have known each other since they were in middle school. They managed to still be friends after the girls-are-icky stage, then after the I-think-he-hates-me stage, and even after the she’s-stalking-me stage. When they were both 15, they finally gave in, admitted they liked each other, and started dating. Then the next year, they both transferred to different high schools.

When it was time for college, Kelsey decided that she would follow Drew to his college of choice out of town, so that they might actually have some time to spend together. But as soon as they were settled, Drew decided that it was not the best college for his career after all, and he wanted to transfer. Kelsey knew he was right, but still cried the whole time they were filling out his transfer application.

When Kelsey graduated and earned her nursing degree, Drew decided that he’s been away from Kelsey long enough. So on a beautiful summer day at the lake, Drew asked Kelsey to be his wife. Kelsey agreed to share her life with him, even though they’re not sure where that will be just yet. They only know that they want to figure it out together.

Ed and I met Kelsey and Drew downtown on an unusually chilly day for their engagement session. They are getting married in June, and we can’t wait for the wedding!

Kelsey and Drew had no problem making out in front of the camera, since it had been so long since they last saw each other! Drew came into town for the photo session, and they were both eager to spend time together, even if it was for photos.

Kelsey has the most adorable smile ever.

And Drew, you’re not half bad either! I can see why Kelsey likes you.

LOVE these.

It was mostly cloudy all day, but the light was still gorgeous.

But when the sun peeked out briefly, we were all eager to get it in a few photos (and warm up)!

I could photograph these two all day. Despite Drew’s aversion to photos, they were both so natural in front of the camera!

See? He’s having fun. Ed’s photo on the right.

We ended up at the river right in time for sunset. Kelsey and Drew are having a special engagement party in December, and Drew’s mom wanted some photos for the Mardi Gras themed festivities. I was all too happy to oblige!

Kelsey and Drew, thank you so much for hanging out with us for an evening! And Drew, special thanks to you for making the trip. I’m so glad you “didn’t hate it” ;) It was so much fun getting to know you better. I know the engagement party will be a blast, and the wedding day will be perfect! I can’t wait!

They say opposites attract, and with Amanda and Kevin, it just might be true. Amanda first saw Kevin from the opposite side of the table. She had just started a new job, and had accepted an invitation to go out with her new coworkers. The next time she saw him, it was from the opposite side of the room. This time, Kevin crossed the distance to start a conversation. Conversation led to an exchange of phone numbers, which led to a date at Starbucks. Kevin knew she really liked him when he found out she didn’t like coffee. Amanda knew he really liked her when they stayed until midnight talking.

A couple years later, Kevin took Amanda on a trip to Vancouver. Amanda was already on cloud 9 after just being accepted into PA school. While sitting in front of the fireplace in the Fairmont lobby, surrounded by convention-goers, Kevin dropped to one knee and made Amanda’s day even brighter (kudos to Amanda’s friend Megan who helped Kevin pick out the ring and arranged to reserve a non-reservable sofa spot in front of the beautiful fireplace!). Her head spinning, she said yes to loud applause. Kevin and Amanda will begin their life together early next year, and I can’t wait for their wedding!

Because Kevin is a proud Memphis firefighter, we started their engagement session in front of his home base, Fire Station #2.

I have to admit, it was WAY cool having a fireman ask me, “where do you want me to put the truck?”

Ed grabbed this shot. Go ahead. Ask me if I’m jealous! Amanda, your red heels were brilliant.

Of course we had to put the jacket on Amanda. And those things are heavy!

Ed’s keen eye again.

My view. Amanda, the helmet suits you!

After an outfit change, we roamed Main Street while waiting on sunset.

Love!

Amanda, you are stunning!

One more change of clothes, then it was onto the roof of the Fire Headquarters for sunset. The view was amazing!

Ed is a pro at holding a reflector while shooting!

I’ll end with this photo of Amanda and Kevin, just making each other happy.

Amanda and Kevin, thank you so much for a memorable experience! I love how we were able to collaborate and make this shoot so personal for you. You are both amazing people, and we loved getting to know you better (we’re making sure you’re not on the clock for the next cocktail, Kevin!).

Here’s to fighting fires. And opposites. And big red trucks. Cheers!
